Should I Get A Divorce – Best Alternative To Divorce From A Cheating Spouse

in Divorce

When you find out your spouse has been cheating there is one question that will be going through your mind more than any other. What is it? It's this: "Should I get a divorce?" Society has taught us that the proper solution to a cheating spouse is divorce.

Modern fiction has posed a few unhealthy alternatives in the form of best selling novels, television shows, and blockbuster films. These options, while sensational, pose a skewed view of what the average person does in the event of a cheating spouse.

You may envision skid marks and burned rubber on the back of your cheating spouse and the "other lover" in this equation but that's a passing fancy that should gain no more traction than an Ally McBeal moment. Those thoughts are amusing to entertain but only healthy when entertained briefly – very briefly.

Should I Get a Divorce after My Spouse Cheated?

Despite the Hollywood image, there is marriage after divorce. It's not usually as sensational as the tabloids would have you believe. Some couples are able to work things out while others have a more difficult time managing to make it work. But, for the most part, couples are able to work through this trying time in the course of their marriages.

When you consider that nearly 60 per cent of all men will cheat on their wives at some point during their marriages and 40 per cent of all women will, there are a lot of marriages that do not end in divorce after cheating. This is especially true when you factor in the fact that only 17 per cent of divorces give infidelity as the reason for the divorce.

In other words, there is nothing at all to support the idea that divorce is the right solution for you and your marriage after cheating has happened. This is something that only you can decide whether or not it's right for you.

What Options to Divorce are There?

You could go for a trial separation. This will give you both the time to sort out your feelings and experience life without the other person in it. If you've been married for a long time this might be exactly what is needed in order to learn to appreciate your spouse all over again.

Another option is marriage counseling. This has helped millions of couples around the world to work things out and have happier and healthier marriages. The problem with this option is that it can be expensive.
